Fáàjí Typeface

Fáàjí Typeface is a new display typeface heavily inspired by the popular Danfo typography, commonly found on public transportation vehicles particularly Danfo(s) in Lagos, Nigeria.

Known for its bold and expressive letter forms, the typography is often seen on quote-like stickers used to decorate their vehicles. These stickers add a personal touch to the vehicles as almost no two Danfo bus is alike, it helps them stand out on the busy streets of Lagos. This "Danfo ritual" is not only visually appealing, but it also reflects the individuality of the drivers who own the vehicle.

Figuring Out The Typeface!

After trying to get familiar with a few of the various lettering styles that existed, I did an initial sketch to get a sense of the direction I would want to take for the project. The goal was to create a typeface that not only looked cool but reminded you of a variation of Danfo Lettering. while also ensuring that it is legible enough to work for Headings & Titles on Both Physical And Digital Mediums.

Creating a
new Variation

With a style already established, the next step was to create the alphabets and glyphs on procreate, after that I transferred my rough sketches to Illustrator for cleanup. this exploration resulted in creating a more contemporary variation of the danfo typography.
